Looking to spruce up your outdoor space this spring? While complete backyard makeovers can cost a pretty penny, there are plenty of ways you can makeover your outdoor space on every budget!

Not only will you be able to enjoy a refreshed backyard and an extended living space once the warm weather finally hits, but you'll have the added benefit of presenting your home at its best when it comes time for you to sell!

Here, we’ve rounded up 14 ways you can update your outdoor space - whatever your budget.

Clean and Remove Clutter

First thing's first - the easiest and most effective way to instantly make your outdoor space look great is to clean it up! Remove weeds and old plants and leaves, tidy up and get rid of any clutter.
As long as your yard is decently maintained, it won't take very long - and best of all, it's totally free!

Stain or Paint Your Deck

If you have a wooden deck or fence, give it a fresh coat of stain or paint this spring to breathe new life into your outdoor space.

Alternatively, you can paint any outdoor furniture, planters or pergolas with a pop of colour for a bolder effect!

Add Textiles

A nice way to bring some warmth to your backyard on chilly spring or summertime evenings is to furnish it with some pillows, blankets or rugs.

If your outdoor space isn't covered, make sure you have adequate storage to stash those textiles so they don't get ruined by the elements!

Planters and Raised Planter Beds

If gardening is your thing, planters and raised planter beds can be a great, inexpensive DIY project. They can help you grow a healthy garden, they act as a deterrent for rodents and pests, and they can be set up in a space of any size. From vegetable gardens to wild flowers, there are plenty of options to makeover your backyard with plants!

When planning, remember that you can use a traditional design, as see in the image at below left, or you can use salvaged items to create a unique look for your yard, such as the metal troughs in the image below right.

Vertical Gardens

Whether you have an apartment balcony or a modest backyard, a vertical garden offers plenty of opportunity for keeping a variety of plants in a small space! They're perfect for succulents, flowers, herbs or smaller vegetables.
From leaning ladders and shelves to pallets and hanging boards, there are many ideas for DIY vertical gardens that can be set up with varying degree of ease. Do a search and check out your options!

Fact: twinkle lights can make any backyard look better. Seriously, a few strings of white lights overhead can completely transform even the drabbest outdoor area and turn it into a welcoming space for evening get-togethers!
Plus, it won't break the budget and will bring brightness and charm to your outdoor space. Solar lanterns or garden lights would also do the trick.

Salvaged Wood Walkway

A garden path is a great way to add a little charm and character to your yard. Materials like brick or flagstone can get quite pricey, but a simple, small path made from salvaged wood is an excellent, low-cost alternative. With a little bit of work, you can create a lovely path like this!

Clean up the clutter (garden tools, backyard games, patio pillows and more) by creating some easy outdoor storage. A wood bench, metal or plastic trunk or outdoor ottoman would work well.

Storage seating like the one pictured below serves as an attractive multi-function feature in your outdoor space!

Add a Hammock

What better way to relax and enjoy the summer in your outdoor space than in a hammock?! Varieties that hang from trees cost under $100, while freestanding options are a bit more.

Another idea is to hang a hammock chair in your seating area for a fun and unique seating option!

People love to gather around a fire! With a little elbow grease, you can easily build a nice fire pit on a budget - or you can often find chimeneas on sale (or used) for less than $100.

Build a Pergola

A pergola is a great way to add a practical, decorative structure to your backyard. You can make it as simple or complex as you want, and if you have a good set of plans and you're handy with a saw and drill, you can have it done in a weekend. There are also many inexpensive prefab versions that you can consider!

Install a Patio

Installing a simple patio using pavers or patio stones is a great way to create a little extra living space without spending a fortune. The stones vary in price, but it doesn't have to break the bank. And once it's done you've got a great space for a living room or dining room furniture arrangement!

Add a Pizza Oven

There are some pizza ovens that are way up there in terms of price, but if you're okay with a simple version, you can get something for a few hundred dollars - or you can build one yourself. Just make sure you have the necessary permits if required.

This is a great way to make your outdoor living space feel more comfortable and fun - who doesn't love pizza?!

If you're looking to make some dramatic changes in your outdoor space, you might consider professional landscaping or installing an in-ground irrigation system. But unless you are planning to enjoy it for yourself for a long time or have a generous budget, we don't advise you go all out on this, simply because the return on investment (ROI) when selling your home is not typically dollar-for-dollar.

However, you can certainly do some landscaping on a budget if you do it yourself or do something that's smaller scale, and it will still have a big impact in your outdoor space!

No matter what you do to spruce up your outdoor space this spring, remember that the changes you make are not only beneficial for you - they also go a long way in presenting your home in the best possible way when it comes time for you to sell! After all, your backyard is a part of your home, so why not make them feel as though it's an extension of your interior space so your home can feel not only larger, but also more cohesive and pleasing to potential buyers!
